1. One-way Quantum Computation
The creation of a quantum computer is one of the overarching challenges of our times. A quantum computer will open before humanity the solution of many fundamental and applied problems. Scientific groups and IT giants have created prototypes of quantum computers. Today, these devices have limited power, which is not enough even to compete with classic computers. However, modern scientific advances are rapidly approaching the moment of creating a universal working prototype of a quantum computer. Such importance of the quantum computer, as well as its rapid development, allows claiming that any scientist needs to understand the principles of operation and the structure of this device. In this course, you will explore in detail the one-way quantum computing model. This model is one of the most promising in terms of practical implementation. In addition, you will understand what continuous-variable quantum computation is and how this type of computation differs from the usual computations with qubits. In addition, you will explore in detail the methods of quantum error correction that can be applied to all models of quantum computation. The authors of the course belong to the theoretical quantum-optical school of St. Petersburg, which arose at the dawn of the formation of this science. We work at St. Petersburg State University and are part of the expert community "Quantum Technologies Consortium"; of the state support program for NTI centers, which supported the creation of this course.
2. Intellectual Property Law in Digital Age
A unique course will help students to get a comprehensive legal education in the field of intellectual property in a fairly short time. The objective of the course is to be as practice-oriented as possible. The course examines the main institutions of intellectual property law: copyright and related rights, patent law, trademark law, legal regulation of domains. The course also includes sections of intellectual property in Software, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Big Data. The course combines elements of legal theory, comparative jurisprudence and current law enforcement practice with an emphasis on the latest technology. The course will help to form students' ideas about intellectual property law and its significance in the system of law; upon completion of the course, students should learn how to apply intellectual property law regulations, draft and analyze license agreements, know the basics of international legal protection of intellectual property.
3. Russian Alphabet
Russian is considered to be one of the world's most difficult languages. This course is aimed at helping those who are interested in understanding the basics of Russian language. Every unit of the course consists of several parts explaining vocabulary, phonetics (pronunciation), grammar, and provides examples of simple dialogues in Russian. Upon completion of the course students will have learned: the structure of simple narrative and interrogative sentences; the formation of Russian names; the three genders of nouns; the difference between Russian adjectives and adverbs, and their uses; the use of verbs in the Present and Past tense as well as their conjugation. The course contains more than 100 new words and conversational phrases providing the learner with a basic vocabulary for everyday communication.
4. Russian for beginners 1. Русский язык: A1
This specialization is aimed at learners who are interested in exploring the Russian language and provides everything you need to start this journey. This specialization contains four courses and begins with an introduction to the basics of the Russian alphabet and phonetics, which will be vital for you as you progress in your studies. All four courses provide extensive theoretical and practical materials and supply listening, reading, and vocabulary exercises to enhance the learning process. Grammar materials will cover parts of speech, case system, verb conjugation, and sentence structure. Upon completion of the specialization, learners will be well-versed in the basic theories and rules of Russian phonetics and grammar; will acquire basic conversation vocabulary; be able to read simple texts; and hold a conversation on everyday topics such as family, travel, hobbies, personal activities, and holidays. Our team is going to further improve and enrich the course materials to provide learners with up-to-date information and to help them progress and achieve the best results.
5. Russian for beginners 2. Русский язык A1
Russian is considered to be one of the world's most difficult languages. This course aimed at helping those who are interested in understanding the Russian language. Every unit of the course consists of several parts explaining vocabulary, phonetics (pronunciation), grammar, and provides examples of simple dialogues in Russian. Russian for Beginners 2 continues to explain the basics of Russian to those who have already completed the first part of the course (Russian for Beginners 1). Upon completion of the course students will have learned: the main Russian verbs of movement as well as their conjugation in the Past, Present and Future tense; the formation of Genitive, Dative and Prepositional case of Russian nouns, pronouns and adjectives; the formation of cardinal and ordinal numerals. The course contains more than 150 new words and conversational phrases providing the learner with a basic vocabulary for everyday communication on such topics as shopping, traveling, life in a city and personal activities.

Russian is considered to be one of the world's most difficult languages. This course is aimed at helping those who are interested in understanding the basics of Russian language. 7. Aerial Photography with UAV
The purpose of the course is to provide students with knowledge about the technology of aerial photography using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The course objectives include: knowledge about various aircraft and payloads, the geodetic control creation, flights planning and their implementation, the main stages of data processing and application of the results obtained. The course is developing by SPBU together with Geoscan Group – the leading Russian UAV manufacturer and processing software developer. This allowed us to make the course fulfilled with the practical aspects of aerial photography with UAV. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: - Select the aircraft and payloads depending on the task and terrain conditions; - Plan flight mission. Students will know: - The UAV composition; - Requirements for geodetic control of flights; - Data processing; - Types of the results and their usage. This course precedes the previously created course - "Photogrammetric processing of aerial photography materials from UAV".
8. Brand management in digital economy
The course is an updated brand management course, taking into account digitalization trends and the specifics of marketing and branding in the context of the transition of companies to the digital economy, as the introduction of digital technologies is reflected in the restructuring of the marketing activities of companies.

13. Commercialization of innovation activity results
This course was created in the partnership with StPetersburg Electrotechnical University ETU "LETI". This course provides the basic knowledge of the patent law, innovation management, and basic marketing methods in the sphere of intellectual activity results. The course examines some issues related to the assessment of the technologies completeness using the methods LIFT and TAME; assessment of the commercial potential of the intellectual activity results based on the business-planning methods and Due Diligence strategy, as well as the classic strategies and key practices of this commercialisation. The course aims at providing learners with the skills in the sphere of legal regulation of the commercialisation in the implementation of the innovative projects. The course introduces learners to the basic terminology, examines the main approaches to assessment and implementation of the project economic efficiency indicators. The issues are considered both from the point of potential investor and the future customer. The course examines the key methods of evaluating the cost of the project and the product, which is to be introduced to the market. Upon completion of this course, learners can solve a variety of problems related to the project management in the sphere of commercialisation of intellectual activity results.
14. Competitive Programmer's Core Skills
Along the way you'll also gain useful skills for which competitive programmers are so highly valued by employers: ability to write efficient, reliable, and compact code, manage your time well when it's limited, apply basic algorithmic ideas to real problems, etc.
15. Computational Geometry
This course represents an introduction to computational geometry – a branch of algorithm theory that aims at solving problems about geometric objects. Its application areas include computer graphics, computer-aided design and geographic information systems, robotics, and many others. You will learn to apply to this end various algorithmic approaches, and asses their strong and weak points in a particular context, thus gaining an ability to choose the most appropriate method for a concrete problem. We will cover a number of core computational geometry tasks, such as testing point inclusion in a polygon, computing the convex hull of a point set, intersecting line segments, triangulating a polygon, and processing orthogonal range queries. Special attention will be paid to a proper representation of geometric primitives and evaluation of geometric predicates, which are crucial for an efficient implementation of an algorithm. Each module includes a selection of programming tasks that will help you both to strengthen the newly acquired knowledge and improve your competitive coding skills.
16. Conflict and stress management
This course contains theoretical and practical materials on organisational culture, business communication, the main characteristics and reasons of conflicts in organisations, exit strategies and stress management. The course aims at shaping the complex knowledge on the theory and methodology of organisational conflict management and stress management, forming practical skills of using different conflict resolution techniques which learners can further use in their professional activities. In addition to theoretical information, many practical tasks and cases are provided by the authors of this course. Course teaching staff include conflict scientists, a psychologist, a mediator, and a specialist in differential psychology. Students will learn the latest techniques in managing organizational conflicts, negotiating,neuro-linguistic programming, and stress management. This course will be useful for all managers and students studying this discipline.
17. Constitutional Reforms in Russia
The course prepared by one of the best Russian experts in constitutional law will focus on political, economic and cultural dimensions of the Russian constitutional system. Historical background of constitutional reforms and today developments will be discussed, basing on concrete examples of these developments.
The course will both observe the specific of the Russian constitutional system in comparison to the other constitutional systems and penetrate into the key characteristics of the Russian constitution. Since adoption of the current Russian constitution of 1993 this constitutional system made a great evolution. The course will help to understand what ideas and concepts stand behind the Russian politics, both domestic and international, which principles lie in the basement of the legal framework for cultural, political and economic life of the Russian society. Foreigners and Russians see the Russian constitutional system in the «distorting mirror» of mass media; both of them need professional analysis of how the legal, governmental and economic systems are designed in Russia. The course will present this kind of analysis by a Russian scholar, familiar to contemporary development of constitutionalism in the world, who is able to present the view from inside Russia, but to position the Russian constitutional system in the a wide context of the world constitutionalism.

18. Contemporary Russian Literature
We are going to talk about Contemporary literature specifically, but it doesn't include only the literature of the most recent years. It is technically a course on the history of literature, but the history starting from the late Soviet period up until today. The goal is to show you the best writers' names, so that you may remember them and read their works after the end of this course. The course will show you the tendencies that were developing in Russian literature in last 25 years, and finally to come to it's present state, in this way forming a journey across the vast sea that is called Russian Literature. 19. Criminology
Course "Criminology" to learn about intended for those who want the phenomenon of crime, its scale and causes, as well as about ways to control it. As part of the course, we will consider the controversy about the concept of crime, turn to the data of criminal statistics, learn the main indicators of crime and find out what tools are used by criminologists for Latvian crimes. We will explore various criminological theories that explain why people commit crimes, from the classical school of criminology to modern integrative theories. Students will learn how theoretical ideas relate to modern criminal policy practices. Finally, we outline the main discussions about the goals and social nature of punishment, and also consider the various approaches to crime prevention and talk about the most relevant ones. Students will also learn about common types of criminological research and take part in some of them.
20. Digitalization in International Relations
International relations, diplomacy, and foreign policy are being digitalized. Four aspects of digitalization in international relations are explored in the course, notably digital diplomacy, big data and data diplomacy, global internet governance, and digital electoral technologies. These components have significant impacts on diplomacy, world politics, and on our everyday lives, in particular. Digital diplomacy utilizes social media in order to influence foreign audiences and is the most effective element in current diplomacy. Big data and data diplomacy refer to various methods used to analyze social networks and embrace artificial intelligence in order to cope with foreign policy issues including the challenges of information confrontation. Global internet governance comprises problems, multilateral negotiations, and agreements between various stakeholders including states and civil society in regard to questions of international and sovereign control of cyberspace. Issues relating to cybersecurity and information security are also discussed in the course and reviewed in terms of international agendas. Digital electoral technologies are a rapidly developing area that have not only national but also international dimensions. The digital technologies include the practices around electronic or digital voting that reveal critical problems related to the influence of foreign actors on national elections. Course participants will gain fundamental knowledge and practical skills regarding how to apply big data analysis, social media methods of analysis, how to build a digital information campaign strategy, how to operate by legal and technical components of global Internet governance in the practice of multilateral negotiations, and how to detect flaws and threats in the field of digital voting. The course is designed for those who want to update their skills for twenty-first professions including digital diplomacy, digital foreign policy, public diplomacy, and other digital professions applicable in international relations.
21. Doing Business in Russia
The aim of the course is to provide an advanced knowledge and expertise of the contemporary Russian business environment and the latest strategies and practices required to do successful business in Russia. Students will learn the peculiarities of Russian economy in the context of the development of international economic relations; assess the role of Russia in the global economy and trends in Russian economic cooperation with its main partner countries; acquire the knowledge about Russian business culture and features of establishing and promoting business on the Russian market.
22. Environmental Safety
Energy is an important part of the world today. Without energy production is impossible, development is impossible, life itself is impossible. Any activity is somehow connected to the energy industry. The future development of the world depends on progress in the energy sector. Existing problems in the energy industry are related not only to environmental pollution, but also to the consumption of limited natural resources. This becomes even more important in the future as the population grows. It is necessary to think about how we can control the impact of energy industry on nature and people? Can society maintain its current level of energy consumption? What resources can we use? In this course we will talk about energy, its impact on the environment, study in detail all components of the environmental safety system and find out how this system can prevent future environmental disasters.
23. Fundamentals of electron and ion microscopy
Electron and ion microscopy techniques are the most widespread tools for imaging and investigation of structural and functional properties of solid and soft matter on micro- and nanoscale, which applications are very broad : material science, microelectronics, nanotechnology, biology, forensics science and many others. This course represents the fundamentals on the working principles of all main components of the modern microscopes such as electron and ion optics as well as diverse signal detectors, on the physics of the particle interaction with the matter and of the image formation in different operation modes. The obtained knowledge will serve as basics for future practical usage of electron and ion microscopy as well as focused ion beam systems in various fields from basic research to industrial applications. A distinguished feature of the course is the consideration of both electron and ion beam technologies, which started to be rapidly growing due to the availability of recently industrially developed dual beam equipment, where these technologies are used jointly.
24. Fundamentals of the Chinese character writing (Part 1)
The course gives a concise survey of the Chinese character-writing tradition. You'll master the fundamentals of the Chinese writing aesthetics; learn about the main phases of the characters' evolution and about the great calligraphers of the past. You are going to distinguish 6 types of the Chinese written symbols, become skilled in history of Chinese scripts and possibility of their modern usage. You'll get the explanation of the 214 Chinese character radicals (the first part in Part 1 of the Course, the second — in Part 2) and can practice their writing, using the animated and static samples given in videos and on pages. Elaborate tests are going to help you regularizing the new information and filling the lacunae.

26. General Pathophysiology
Warning: this course contains shocking materials and is not recommended for viewing to persons with weak psyche, minors and pregnant women.
The course describes subject and methods of Pathophysiology, its place within system of biomedical sciences and history. It includes General Nosology (concept of health and disease, general etiology and pathogenesis, pathological processes and states, role of causal factors, conditions, reactivity and somatotype in pathology). It gives systematic of locally and centrally driven typical pathological processes: arterial, venous and combined hyperemiae, stasis, inflammation, immunopathological processes (including allergy and autoimmune disorders) acute phase response, fever, stress, shock, etc. Course deals with functional, metabolic and informational aspects of typical pathologic processes, like disorders of signaling, reception, post – receptor translation, programming and program archiving, conflicts of programs in living systems. It contains the consequent analysis of the injury and defensive responses as regards separate cells, organs and tissues and the whole organism. The lectures based on author's original three-volumed textbook and workshop in Pathophysiology republished in Russia many times.
27. Heart Physiology
The program of the course "Heart Physiology" is compiled taking into account the state standard for teaching the basic course of physiology according to the undergraduate curriculum. An important feature of the course is the presentation of the material at different levels: a combination of molecular, cellular and systemic approaches in describing the functions of organs. The course presents basic and modern data on the functional characteristics and histological structure of cardiomyocytes; the formation of the action potential of various myocardial cells; fundamentals of myocardial mechanics, mechanisms of contraction and relaxation of cardiomyocytes; principles of intercellular interaction of myocardial infants; cellular electrophysiology in myocardial ischemia; mechanisms of action of cardiotropic pharmacological drugs; dysfunction of the heart. The main goal of the course is acquisition of knowledge about the mathematical and statistical basics underlying the main ideas and approaches used in data science. This is achieved through setting and solving typical tasks, which a researcher in the field of data science can face in his work. You will get practical skills in working with data analysis tools used in different spheres of human activity. You will be acquainted with the main tasks, methods and basic algorithms, as well as with the spheres of their practical applications. You will know how applied problems of data processing and analysis are being solved. You will be acquainted with the main concepts of artificial neural networks and the ways they are being trained.
30. Japanese for beginners 1
Japanese language has become extremely popular among learners in recent years, since it is the best way to explore one of the richest and most mysterious cultures of the modern East. This course is aimed at those who are interested in understanding Japanese way of thinking and view of the world through learning the language. Course materials are provided by the teaching staff from the Department of Japan Studies. Upon completion of this course the learners will be able: 1. To read simple texts in Japanese and write using the hiragana and katakana scripts as well as the kanji characters. 2. To understand basic vocabulary in speech and use it in everyday communicative situations. 3. To form their own sentences using the provided grammar material. The course provides extensive materials on Japanese grammar, phonetics, writing system and communication etiquette, as well as exercises for learners to apply the new knowledge. The vocabulary of the course consists of more than 200 words. Course materials are provided by the teaching staff from the Department of Japan Studies. Upon completion of this course the learners will be able: 1. To read texts in Japanese and write using the hiragana and katakana scripts as well as the kanji characters. 2. To understand basic vocabulary in speech and use it in everyday communicative situations (shopping, traveling, visiting friends, phone conversations etc). 3. To form their own sentences using the provided grammar material. This course introduces a lot of new grammar constructions, useful vocabulary and conversational phrases to the learners, who already completed Japanese for beginners 1. Five units of this course aim to enrich learners oral and written speech and help in acquiring fluency in Japanese.

34. Mathematical Game Theory
Every day, almost every minute we make a choice. Right now you have made the choice to read this text instead of scrolling further. Choices can be insignificant: to go by tram or by bus, to take an umbrella or not. Sometimes they can be very significant and even crucial: the choice of University, life partner. However, the importance of choice may not be realized initially. Sometimes a decision "not to take an umbrella" radically changes everything. The choice may affect a small group of people or entire countries. In game тtheory, we call it the choice of strategy. Constantly interacting with society and adopting certain strategies, many of us wonder: why can't everyone exist peacefully and cooperate with each other? Why do those who have agreed to cooperate, suddenly break the agreement? What if one is cooperative and the other is not? How profitable should the interaction be for the opponent to change his opinion? When are long-term stable prospects better than short-term benefits, and when not? The answers to these and other questions you will find out in our course. This course will be useful for those who want to make choices based on mathematical calculations rather than relying on fate. Who is interested in world politics and at least once heard about the "Prisoner's Dilemma". The course is basic and does not require any special knowledge. In several sections, definitions and theorems from mathematical analysis and elements of probability theory will be used.
35. Multi-agent Technologies
A significant reduction in the size of computing devices and an increase in their speed provide new opportunities for solving traditionally complex, multidimensional problems of optimization, resource allocation, logistics, etc. Multi-agent technologies (MT) were born at the junction of modern distributed methods for solving various problems, parallel programming and artificial intelligence. At the heart of MT is a decentralized approach to solving problems, in which dynamically updated information in a distributed network of intelligent agents is processed not in some center, but directly at the agents along with locally available information from neighbors. At the same time, both the resource and time costs for communication in the network and the time for processing and decision-making in the center of the entire system (if there is one) are significantly reduced. Emergent intelligence (intellectual resonance, swarm intelligence) is an occurrence of unexpected properties that a system possesses, but none of its individual elements has. Key feature is the dynamics and unpredictability of the decision making process.
36. Neurolinguistics
This course introduces the key principles and goals of modern neurolinguistics. Neurolinguistics is a science that incorporates methods and paradigms of linguistics and neuroscience.
This course discusses the main units and organizational principles of the human nervous system that underlie our language capacity. You will learn about the neurophysiological aspects of first and second language learning, discover clinical research in speech, reading and writing disorders, and also find out about speech disorders accompanying various psychiatric conditions. The course includes information on the history of neurolinguistics, modern techniques and methods of neurolinguistic research, and also provides detailed examples of several recent studies in the field.
The outline of the course
Module 1 introduces you to the main ideas and history of neurolinguistics. In this module you will learn how the human brain is organized and which cortical areas provide the basis for our language capacity. It also touches upon neuroevolution and the differences between the human brain and the brains of other mammals.
In Module 2 you will learn about modern methods and techniques of neurolinguistic research, such as EEG, MEG, intracranial EEG, evoked and induced potentials.
Module 3 continues the discussion of neurolinguistic research methods, introducing you to the fMRI method. It also provides examples of three recent neurolinguistic studies, detailing every stage: how the experiments were planned and conducted, and how the data was analysed.
Module 4 discusses how children learn their first and second languages. It also touches upon the differences in the ways monolinguals and bilinguals process linguistic information.
Modules 5 and 6 deal with clinical research in neurolinguistics. In Module 5 you will learn about aphasia. We will discuss the underlying causes of this disorder, its main types and different approaches to their classification and assessment. You will also learn about linguistic models based on aphasia data.
Module 6 continues the topic of clinical research in neurolinguistics. In this module you will learn about auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, their causes and treatment. This module also discusses brain asymmetry with regards to language and dichotic listening as a means of studying brain asymmetry.
Module 7 is devoted to dyslexia and its comorbidities. This module will introduce you to four different approaches to dyslexia. You will also learn what longitudinal studies can tell us about dyslexia.
37. Physical Basics of Quantum Computing
Quantum information and quantum computations is a new, rapidly developing branch of physics that has arisen from quantum mechanics, mathematical physics and classical information theory. Significant interest in this area is explained by the great prospects that will open upon the implementation of its ideas, capturing almost all areas of human activity related to the transfer, storage and processing of information. The purpose of this course is to show the basic ideas of quantum informatics, as well as the physical laws and basic mathematical principles. Much attention is paid to such phenomena as quantum entanglement, quantum parallelism, and quantum interference. It is these phenomena that underlie most of the known quantum protocols and algorithms, which are devoted to individual sections of this course. In particular, from the course, students will learn about quantum teleportation, quantum algorithms, quantum error correction and other topics related to the quantum computations theory. As a result of the course, the students will be able to master the modern mathematical apparatus of quantum mechanics used in quantum computations, master the ideas that underlie the most important quantum logic algorithms and protocols for transmitting and processing quantum information, and learn how to solve problems on these topics.
38. Political Governance and Public Policy in Russia
The course is designed to study the features of the political structure of modern Russia. It contains both general information on the institutional, procedural and value components of the political system and public policy in Russia, as well as a description of the problems, contradictions and prospects for the political development of the country. The course contains three main modules: (1) the political system and regime in Russia: state institutions, political parties, civil society; (2) the public policy process in Russia: the mechanisms for elaborating, adopting and implementing policies and decisions; (3) directions and problems of economic and social policy in Russia: development based on stabilization. The course is aimed at those listeners who want to gain systematic knowledge of politics in Russia, as well as those who are focused on studying Russia's political development in complex and uncertain contexts. Studying the course students can choose the level of the course (general or in-depth), focusing on video material, information, discussions, forums, evaluations and interactive communication with teachers. The advanced level of the course development assumes the active participation of students in discussions, forums and project assignments. The overall mission of the course is to develop students' objective political knowledge about Russia and their ability to make critical scientific analysis and assessment.

The course "Practices of digital transformations", developed by SPbU together with ETU , contains the necessary materials for digitalization of business processes of an enterprise in the context of modern infocommunication infrastructures. The course contains information on methods and models for assessing the digital maturity of infocommunication infrastructure, cognitive complexity and readiness for digital transformation. For the first time, an extensive material on the classification and content of indicators of business processes of various enterprise resources for digitalization is presented.
40. Protists: Evolution and Ecology of Microbial Eukaryotes
Life on Earth appears to be dominated by higher plants and animals. Yet an immense variety of microbial eukaryotes swarm in the foliage, grass, soil, bogs, ponds, streams, lakes, and oceans. These inconspicuous organisms are flagellates, algae, ciliates, sarcodines, slime molds, apicomplexans. This assemblage is generally termed the protists. Our course is to build a comprehensive picture of protistan diversity. The major steps of eukaryotic evolution will be in focus. By tracking phylogenetic affinities in protistan lineages we will elucidate the major branches on the tree of eukaryotic life.
Many protists are unicellular. This single cell is simultaneously a self-sufficient organism, which is able to sense, move, feed, and repulse an attack on its own. Therefore, protistan cells often demonstrate greater complexity of organelles, structures, and controls than the specialized cells of metazoan animals and higher plants. We will explore how free-living and parasitic unicells implement locomotion, food acquisition, digestion, osmotic regulation, and how they accomplish their life cycle. We also will look into how protists interact with the environment and manage to be biological success.
Within the six modules, we will speak of (1) what protists are, (2) flagellates, (3) sarcodines and slime molds, (4) ciliates, (5) apicomplexans and microsporidians, and (6) finally we will go over the modern phylogeny, will summarize life histories and discuss evolutionary trends in free-living and parasitic protists. This online course will have an optional on-campus extension, when the students have one week of practical exercises in the lab. Using light microscopy, they will observe, explore, and document live specimens and fixed mounts of naked and testate amoebas, foraminiferans, radiolarians, heliozoans, myxomycetes, flagellates, ciliates, gregarines, and coccidians.
41. Quantum Computing. Less Formulas - More Understanding
This is yet one more introductory course on quantum computing. Here I concentrate more on how the mathematical model of quantum computing grows out from physics and experiment, while omitting most of the formulas (when possible) and rigorous proofs. On the first week I try to explain in simple language (I hope) where the computational power of a quantum computer comes from, and why it is so hard to implement it. To understand the materials of this week you don't need math above the school level. Second and third weeks are about the mathematical model of quantum computing, and how it is justified experimentally. Some more math is required here. I introduce the notion of a linear vector space, discuss some simple differential equations and use complex numbers. The forth week is dedicated to the mathematical language of quantum mechanics. You might need this if you want to dig deeper into subject, however I touch only the tip of the iceberg here. On the week 5 I finally introduce some simple quantum algorithms for cryptography and teleportation.
42. Russia and Nuclear Arms Control
As a state with one of the largest arsenals of nuclear weapons Russia is a key participant of nuclear non-proliferation regime and defines nuclear arms control as a priority of its foreign policy. This course will discover the logic and the frames of Russian nuclear arms control policies. You will learn the historical background and the modern context of bilateral US-Russian relations in nuclear arms control and understand how these relations influence the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. You will get the basic tools for analyzing Russian defence and security policy in regards to nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

We live in a very amazing and disturbing time. No one could have imagined that a single phenomenon in the field of biology (mutation of the virus and its transition to a new organism) would cause such large-scale changes in the life of everyone, the economy and politics of almost all countries of the world. The purpose of our course is to provide fundamental knowledge in one of the fields of microbiology and physiology, concerning the nature of viruses and their interaction with humans, with an emphasis on the new SARS-CoV2 virus. During a difficult situation in the world associated with the spread of SARS-CoV2 coronaviruses, more and more conflicting information about their nature and methods of struggle appears in the media. Now the main focus of the information provided is shifted to the discussion of the pandemic. Someone talks about methods of treating the disease with folk remedies, someone even completely rejects the presence of danger. The spread of false information is increasing, as well as the number of people who believe it. But we live in a modern civilized society, where it is no longer customary to predict rain with the help of incantations, for this there are meteorological satellites and weather stations. A modern educated person knows that diseases are caused by various microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, microscopic fungi) that live side by side with us on our planet. But, however, many people still do not understand what a "virus" is? Where does it come from? What are the stages of its life cycle? Why does it infect new living organisms? Our lectures on viruses are designed for those who are not left indifferent by the above questions and who have basic knowledge that will help to eliminate misunderstandings in this area of microbiology. This group, first of all, includes biological and medical students. Let's try to figure it out together.

As a result, learners will obtain broad understanding of the modern methods for launching a startup project, evaluation of its perspectives and risk reduction.

This course was created in the partnership with StPetersburg Electrotechnical University ETU "LETI". This course is made for everyone, who is interested in the development of startup projects in the realm of globalisation, crowdsourcing and the emergence of "open-source" innovations. The course can be chosen for beginner level, or become an additional material to the innovation-related higher education curriculum. The course can be successfully completed by the learners with the basic knowledge of innovation theory and/or management (Bachelor degree or higher). Upon completion of this course learners will be well-versed in the basic economic models in the digital environment, types of monetisation used for open innovations, will be able to create a business model of value in the open-knowledge environment. The learners will study the key problems of the digital environment, main methods for building an innovative project, as well as how to limit the access to the information. They will be able to search for the governmental means of support for open innovation projects, private investment resources, and assess the level of maturity of the project.

48. The Development of Mobile Health Monitoring Systems
This join course created by SPSU and ETU includes 5 modules dedicated to different stages of the system development. Its modules represent several widely separated fields of biomedical engineering. We interconnect them by applying the knowledge from them all to a common task – the development of a prototype of an mHealth ECG system with built-in data-driven signal processing and analysis. Working on this task throughout the course, you will acquire a knowledge on how these branches of science, including electronics, mathematics, data science and programming are applied together in a real project. Pieces of hardware and software, as well as the data sets that we utilize in this course are the same components that we use in our work developing prototypes of devices and algorithms for our tasks in science and engineering. The course is a joint work of Saint Petersburg State University and Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University ETU ("LETI"). Note that the goal of the course is not to provide you with fundamental knowledge on any of the topics highlighted in the modules, but to give you some useful skills on implementing them in practical tasks.
49. The Introduction to Quantum Computing
"Quantum Computing" is among those terms that are widely discussed but often poorly understood. The reasons of this state of affairs may be numerous, but possibly the most significant among them is that it is a relatively new scientific area, and it's clear interpretations are not yet widely spread. The main obstacle here is the word "quantum", which refers to quantum mechanics - one of the most counter-intuitive ways to describe our world. But fear not! This is not a course on quantum mechanics. We will gently touch it in the beginning and then leave it apart, concentrating on the mathematical model of quantum computer, generously developed for us by physicists. This doesn't mean that the whole course is mathematics either (however there will be enough of it). We will build a simple working quantum computer with our bare hands, and we will consider some algorithms, designed for bigger quantum computers which are not yet developed. The course material is designed for those computer scientists, engineers and programmers who believe, that there's something else than just HLL programming, that will move our computing power further into infinity. Since the course is introductory, the only prerequisites are complex numbers and linear algebra. These two are required and they have to be enough.
50. Visual Perception and Visual Illusions
Vision is one of the main ways for us to gather information about the world around us and about ourselves. Thus, studying vision naturally leads to new hypotheses on how cognition works. This way, our course on visual perception will also provide you with knowledge on cerebral mechanisms of vision, sensory systems and, in general, on how the mind and consciousness work. This course is aimed at everyone who is interested in perceptual psychology, in particular, psychology of visual perception. The course discusses different theoretical approaches to studying vision, introduces the most important concepts and experimental results. The material is selected in such a way that the course is interesting and accessible for both students who study psychology and general audience without special knowledge in this area. The course includes lectures, presentations and graded tests. Each student will be required to perform a small research project to be submitted by the end of the course.

This course is aimed at those who have completed their studies of the Russian language at A2-B1 level and feel ready to pass the First Certification Level of the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL, or ТРКИ). Successful performance in the First Level Certificate indicates an intermediate level of competence, which enables a candidate to satisfy his main communicative needs in everyday, cultural, educational and professional spheres in line with the State Standard of Competence in Russian as a Foreign Language. In addition, the First Level Certificate allows its holder to enroll in a Russian university. The course consists of 6 weeks, with the first week introducing learners to the structure and basic requirements for the examination. 58. Arabic for Beginners: Introductory Course
The Arabic for beginners course is designed for everyone who wants to learn the Arabic language. During the course students will get acquainted with the Arabic alphabet. Experienced teachers will introduce you to the peculiarities of the spelling and pronunciation of each letter. The explanation is accompanied by a large number of examples, which include this or that letter. The illustrations that accompany each word will help you remember new words. In addition to familiarizing yourself with the basics of graphics and pronunciation, the course provides basic grammar material. Students will be able to get information on how to determine the gender of a word, its state, build the simplest phrases and sentences, as well as ask and answer the simplest questions. After completing the alphabet training, the acquired skills are improved and consolidated on the basis of the simplest dialogues and texts. The course consists of 5 modules, each of which includes video lectures and exercises to test the acquired skills, as well as vocabulary used in the module. When developing the course, many years of experience in teaching Arabic at the Department of Arabic Philology of St. Petersburg State University were taken into account.
